What Is A Ranch-Style Floor Plan?

A ranch-style home is a single-story design popularized in the post-war period. Ranch style homes have a low profile and large, open square footage.

From the start, a ranch-style home will give you double square footage than it appears at first glance. This is due to the presence of a very large basement, which is a mirror image of the first floor. A 1,500 square foot home is really a 3,000 square foot home when factoring in the mirroring basement. These basement spaces are versatile. They can be finished or unfinished, used for laundry, storage, living quarters, game rooms, areas for entertaining guests, bars, and more.

Open floor plans have seen a rise in popularity recently, and ranch homes offer the best option for openness. These floor plans are ideal for people looking for spaces that breathe and flow. This also makes moving and rearranging furniture much more easy.

What to think about when considering a ranch?

Like any home decision, choosing a floor plan depends greatly on your stage in life. If you are approaching retirement age, a ranch may be the ideal fit for you as it has much less of a reliance on stairs. The master bedroom and most living quarters on a ranch style home are on the first floor. Your custom home is a long-term investment, and you should take where you’ll be years into the life of you home into account just as much as where you are now. As you get older, stairs become not only more of a battle to use on a daily basis, but a hazard for falls. With ranch style homes, the bulk of your day-to-day life is on one level.

Likewise, parents, especially those with young children or considering starting a family, should consider the benefits of having bedrooms close together. If your kids are older and want more privacy, split-range ranches feature floor plans with the master bedroom on one side of the house, and the rest of the living quarters on the other.

Ranch VS. Two-Story

We also offer two-story floor plans. We will go over the positives and drawbacks of each style when we meet with you. Ranch-style homes typically cost more than two-story floor plans because the sprawling, open-style design requires more concrete to construct. Two story homes also offer more square footage with the extra floor. Your choice ultimately comes down to which style will fit your lifestyle and life stage, which aesthetic you prefer, and which floor plan fits your budget.

Come meet with us and we will review your options and show you examples of our ranch and two-story floor plans. We will find the right home for your life and your budget, and get you in the custom home of your dreams.
